As you probably know, or will soon know, Gully Foyle gets a tattoo in chapter 2. In this novel, like in many cultures, tattooing is highly ritualistic and happens at halmark moments in people's lives. While we don't exactly know what that halmark moment is yet in the novel, it will be clear to you by the end of the book (hopefully).

How were tattoos viewed by society when this book was created (1950s)? How are they viewed by society now?

Discuss who in society might get/have gotten a tattoo then and now.

Keep in mind also the socially appropriate places to get and not to get tattoos. Does the placement of Gully's tattoo have any significance?
